Leicester Police: A New Ladies Locker Room
With more women joining the force, Leicester Police needed to rethink the ladies locker room at the station. The existing space was not keeping up with the growing number of female officers, so they came to us for a layout that gave everyone their own secure spot and handled the bulky kit that comes with the job.
The Brief
The room had to do several jobs at once. Every officer needed a locker for personal belongings, dedicated storage for a kitbag, and proper hanging space for heavier items like jackets and vests. Comfortable seating was part of the ask too, so officers had somewhere to change without crowding the room.
As the number of female staff increased, the old setup could not offer enough individual, secure storage. The refit needed to give each officer their own space while making full use of the room.
What We Supplied
We fitted the room with 2 tier Premier lockers, giving each officer a secure compartment for personal items and doubling the number of users the same footprint could hold.
Underneath the lockers we built in open kitbag storage, so bags sit tidily below rather than on the floor or taking up locker space. That keeps walkways clear and the room easy to move around in.
Running along the base we installed bench seating, which gives officers a solid place to sit and change while forming the top of the kitbag cubes below. One run of furniture, three jobs: storage, seating and structure.
For the heavier uniform, we added combination units with full length hanging space. Jackets, vests and coats now have a dedicated home, kept off the lockers and hung properly rather than folded away.
The whole room was finished in a blue and grey scheme, with hard wearing surfaces suited to daily use in a busy station.
The Result
Leicester Police now have a ladies locker room built around the real demands of the job. More officers can be accommodated in the same space, personal kit and heavy uniform each have a proper place, and the seating keeps the room practical for shift changes.
It is a straightforward example of what considered locker room design can do: take a space that was falling behind and turn it into something that works harder for the people using it every day.
